Pyroban® has recently shipped a new batch of diesel engines for ATEX Zone 2 areas offshore. Featuring Ever Clear™, the long life exhaust flame arrestor, each HazPak™ unit has the benefit of low maintenance requirements when in operation.

The new ATEX powerpacks are fully built at the Pyroban factory in Shoreham by Sea, W. Sussex, UK and are based on Caterpillar 3406 and C4.4TA marine engines with no loss of power. For example, the 3406 Zone 2 diesel engines seen on the left hand side of this picture will deliver 356kw (490bhp) of power offshore.

The Zone 2 diesel engines are built for safe and reliable operation in harsh offshore environments in accordance with ATEX 2014/34/EU and all necessary standards including EN1834-1:2000. This means they cannot be the source of an ignition in the event of a hydrocarbon release.

The 3406 and C4.4TA HazPaks are equipped with an Ever Clear™ exhaust flame arrestor which offers many benefits to operators, including reduced maintenance costs, increased personnel safety and reduced operational downtime.

Ever Clear is seen above on the left of this C4.4TA diesel engine between the turbo and gas cooler, on the hot side of the exhaust flow. The engine provides 112kW (156 bhp) of reliable power and will be operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ever Clear reduces downtime on ATEX Zone 2 diesel engines

Ever Clear exhaust flame arrestors act as a direct replacement for the traditional “plate type” flame arrestors often found in Pyroban explosion protected Zone 2 diesel engines. Ever Clear exhaust flame arrestors:

  • Will stop a flame in the event of an exhaust backfire caused by hydrocarbon gas ingestion
  • Allow the engine exhaust gases to pass through without clogging – no loss of performance
  • Avoid manual handling and solvent cleaning issues associated with plate type flame arrestors on Zone 2 diesel engines
  • Remove any concern about “dummies” wrongly used in their place
  • Are available on new HazPak builds, as part of a Pyroban kit or as a retrofit

Pyroban HazPaks feature an air inlet shut-off valve, air inlet flame arrestor, water-cooled turbocharger and exhaust manifold, exhaust gas heat exchanger, thermal control and treatment, ATEX certified spark arrestor and much more.

Zone 2 diesel engines

These Zone 2 diesel engines are a perfect example of the protection required for diesel engines operating in Zone 2 hazardous areas offshore. They demonstrate complete safety and the assurance of compliance without compromise providing, genuine protection for operators and the complete rig asset.

Pyroban offers a range of radiator to flywheel HazPak™ ATEX engines, which provide up to 1100 bhp. They are fully Ex-certified packaged engines, Equipment Group II, Category 3G, Gas Group IIA and Temperature Class T3.

Pyroban HazPaks are designed for harsh offshore environments, produced to specification and receive great support in the field.
