If you have a one-off requirement for an Ex certified product (or assembly) and don’t have the time or experience to undertake the project, Pyroban’s EXSolutions team can help. But how does the process work? Richard Ellis explains.

Here at EXSolutions, we see all sorts of products from customers who want an ATEX or IECEx version of their goods. Sometimes other global regulations as well.

But how does it work? We follow our four-stage process that we call Phase 1 to Phase 4. Or P1-4 for short.

Whether it’s a drone or a camera, a robot or something different, we follow the same process. We help get the product through the highly regulated explosion protection product development process and do it for all sorts of customers needing products for hazardous area use.

P1 – Introductions to EX product development requirements

P1 is the very start of any project where the EXSolutions team listens and understands the explosion proof product development requirements.

P2 – Assessment

P2 is a quotation where we assess the product or equipment to understand what components could be the source of an ignition. We look at all the statutory risks, document the effectiveness of each scenario, in a simple, standardised way for presentation back to you.

It’s this part of the process that helps define what needs to be done to gain maximum progress promptly to create an explosion proof product that complies with ATEX, IECEx or other local regulation.

P3 – Clause by Clause Assessment

P3 is all about the details. This is where the most amount of work takes place for product assessment, and suitability for the application of different explosion protection concepts.

Often split into sub phases due to the complexity of the goods. We carry out clause by clause assessments against the relevant standards to define the best way forward for your needs. We identify criteria to be upheld and carry out testing.

P4 – Market ready explosion proof product

P4 gets the “EX” product ready for market. Often, we commit to produce explosion proof prototypes, and set out manufacturing controls and periodic testing for integrity. We also include the explosion protection marking, documentation and certification in this stage.
